Week 5 of Pregnancy

It’s week five of your pregnancy, and you're probably wondering what to expect, including changes with you and your baby’s development. It might be hard to believe but week five is actually the first week of your second month of pregnancy.

In this blog we are going to be talking about week five baby development, symptoms and body changes you might be experiencing, and how to manage them.

5 Weeks Pregnant Symptoms

When we talk about symptoms and body changes, the most important thing is to know that there's a wide range of symptoms that you can experience. You might experience all of these symptoms, you might experience none, or somewhere in between and that's totally okay. Here are the most common symptom at 5 weeks pregnant:

  • Absence of a period. While most women don't have a menstrual period at this time, some women will have very light spotting or some irregular bleeding.

  • Significant hormonal change in your body. This can disrupt your digestive system leading to bloating and constipation.

  • Mood swings. Irritability and heightened emotions, as well as fatigue, continues this week.

  • Frequent trips to the bathroom.

  • Food aversions and Cravings. You may find yourself crying easily about how you no longer can eat your favorite foods.

  • Increase in fullness and tenderness in your breasts. Many women find that they can see changes to their breasts much earlier than changes to their abdomen.

If you ever have any concerns about a symptom or a change with your body, don't hesitate to reach out to your care provider. That could be your general practitioner, your OB-GYN or your midwife.

5 Weeks Pregnant Baby Development

At 5 weeks pregnant, the baby is called an embryo and is about the same size as a sesame seed measuring approximately 0.5 to 1 inches (1.3 to 2.5 millimeters) in length. This is another important week for rapid cell development, it's a time when many of the organs and systems of the body are being set up. Here are the milestones that happen when you 5 weeks pregnant:

5 weeks embryo is like the size of a sesame seed.

  •  Closure of the neural tube.  This structure will go on to form the brain, the spinal cord, and the entire central nervous system.
  • The embryos circulatory system and digestive system are developing rapidly. The heart and major blood vessels, and something called the gut tube, are taking form which are going to turn into major digestive organs.

  • The umbilical cord continues to grow. It will serve as an important organ bringing nutrients to the embryo from the placenta, and removing waste from the embryo.

5 Weeks Pregnant To Do List

Each week we are going to tackle items you want to put on your list, and here are some of the top priorities at 5 weeks pregnant:

Make a prenatal appointment. If you haven't done that yet, go ahead and get that done this week with your OB-GYN or Midwife. If you don't have one yet, then call your general practitioner for an appointment, or in some cases, there are family doctors that you can also see for your pregnancy.

Manage questions. It is common to have questions for your provider that pop up in between appointments. So that you don't forget these questions, keep an ongoing list on your phone in the notes app, or you might even want an old school journal to keep the information.

You can also use the journal that I created to help you keep track of your pregnancy journey. There you can keep your own “think and do list” and all of your questions, as well as record symptoms and milestones.

Be aware. We are building on this idea by avoiding harmful foods, so let's break these into some groups.

  • Avoid uncooked or undercooked foods. If you're going to eat meat, seafood, or egg, it must be thoroughly cooked. Deli meat sandwiches for instance need to be heated thoroughly, sushi and raw fish should be skipped now.

  • Avoid fish containing high levels of mercury. These are big eye tuna, king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, swordfish, shark, and tilefish.

  • Unpasteurized Dairy items. If you're at a party and they have a beautiful charcuterie board with meats and cheeses, you should probably just skip that. You don't know if those cheeses have been pasteurized.

  • Avoid alcohol and limit your caffeine intake. The amount of caffeine that's safe according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), pregnant women should limit their caffeine consumption to less than 200mg per day (about 2 to 6 cups of coffee).
Sushi is not good for pregnant women.
